Intro to Banjo AND Int/Adv Banjo Workshops - Beginner - 7:00 OR Int/Adv - 8:15

7010 Westmoreland Ave.
Takoma Park Maryland
Price: $100 for the 4-week course

Clawhammer Banjo from Scratch -- 7:00-8:00 pm In this introduction to the Clawhammer banjo style, the class will examine and practice the fundamentals of this very accessible, very fun, and increasingly popular style of banjo playing. No banjo playing experience is necessary; true beginners are welcome. Upon completion of the course, students will have a couple of tunes under their belt and an understanding of the basic techniques and skills needed to play Clawhammer banjo. Whether helping you experience the rich and vibrant heritage of Appalachian string band music, accompanying you in a song, or just giving voice to a tune in your heart, the banjo will be your lifelong friend!

Clawhammer Banjo Workshop: "Beyond the Bum-Ditty" -- 8:15-9:15 pm In this workshop, Brad Kolodner, a rising star in the clawhammer banjo world, will explore the versatile nature of old-time banjo and go beyond the bum-ditty. All skill levels are welcome. Kolodner walks the line between the rhythmic and melodic styles of clawhammer banjo playing with an emphasis on pushing the boundaries of what is considered "traditional." Brad will teach a new tune each week as a vehicle for exploring a variety of techniques. Possible topics include drop-thumb, syncopations, bass-lines, chord substitutions, going up the neck, triplet pull-offs, fretting the fifth string, back-up pattern, singing while playing and achieving good tone. Regardless of your skill level, you will walk out the workshop with a handful of new tips and tricks to implement in your playing.

Space is limited! Contact HMT to register at workshops@hmtrad.com or 301-270-9090. Or you can download our registration form and either email, fax or mail back to us (contact info is on the form).
