Growing up in a musical family, Brad was exposed to Folk and Roots music from birth. His father Ken Kolodner is a renowned hammered dulcimer player and fiddler who toured for many years in the folk trio Helicon. When Brad picked up the banjo at age 17, everything started to click into place. Since then, he’s charted a path centered on performing, recording, broadcasting and community organizing. He’s an acclaimed clawhammer banjo player who performs with the chart-topping Irish, Old-Time, Bluegrass fusion quartet Charm City Junction. He’s recorded four albums of Old-Time and original music with his father Ken under the name Ken & Brad Kolodner including their latest Billboard-charting release Stony Run (2020). He's performed across the country on some of the biggest stages for Folk and Roots music including the Kennedy Center, Strathmore, American Folk Festival, Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, Charm City Bluegrass Festival and Old Songs Folk Festival. His debut solo album Chimney Swifts released in the fall of 2021.
While in college, Brad developed a passion for radio broadcasting. He hosts two weekly radio programs on Bluegrass Country Radio (WAMU-DC) and Radio Bristol (WBCM-TN/VA) featuring the latest releases in Progressive Bluegrass, Americana and Old-Time music. In early 2021, Brad signed on as a daily host for the acclaimed online radio station Folk Alley. He was nominated for the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Broadcaster of the Year Award in 2019, 2020 and 2021. He currently serves on the IBMA Board of Directors.
Brad is a major driver behind the bustling Old-Time and Bluegrass scene in his hometown of Baltimore. He co-founded the bi-weekly Baltimore Old Time Jam, monthly Baltimore Square Dance and the annual Baltimore Old-Time Music Festival held at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. When he’s not playing banjo, on the air or organizing community events, you can find Brad rock climbing, playing squash, hiking or tending to his vegetable garden in the backyard of his Baltimore rowhouse.
"Banjo player Brad Kolodner takes the clawhammer style to heady heights, soloing with the deftness of a bebop player, despite the physical limitation of doing so on his plunking instrument." - WMOT Radio
Brad grew up in a house full of traditional world folk music. His father Ken is an accomplished hammered dulcimer player and Old-Time fiddler. While it wasn't until the age of 17 when Brad first picked up the banjo, he soaked up his father's music throughout childhood. He was introduced to clawhammer banjo when he spontaneously signed up for a banjo-from-scratch class taught by clawhammer legend Richie Stearns at the Meadowlark Music camp in Maine. The following year, Brad started his first year as a student at Ithaca College in New York to pursue a degree in Television-Radio. It was in Ithaca, a hotbed for Old-Time music, where his interest in the music was cemented. Within a couple of years, he began performing regularly with his father throughout the East Coast and competing in regional banjo contests. Perhaps his first most notable performance came in 2009 when he performed on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center with his father. The following year, Brad won the prestigious 2010 Old-Time Banjo Festival Contest in Takoma Park, MD, earning a performance slot later that evening at The Birchmere where he opened for Grammy-winning banjo legends Tony Trischka and Cathy Fink. That performance became a launching point for Kolodner's career as an Old-Time musician. He has since placed in the finals of the banjo contest in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018 at the Appalachian String Band Festival in Clifftop, WV, one of the most prestigious Old-Time banjo contests in the world.
In the summer of 2010, Brad and his father Ken completed their first collaborative studio album, Otter Creek, featuring many of Brad’s originals along with traditional Old-Time tunes. On the recording, Brad played banjo and an instrument called the banjola, a cross between the banjo and the mandola. Soon after its release, Sing Out! Magazine hailed the album as “a joyous recording featuring two fine musicians who play excellently together. There must be something special to that father-son thing.” The Old Time Herald said, “Father and son have reached that musical telepathy that family members can sometimes achieve. The blend of the hammered dulcimer and banjo is exceptional.” The album later became the most played instrumental album on the American Folk-DJ Radio charts in 2011. The title track, “Otter Creek,” written by Brad, was the most played instrumental track on the Folk-DJ Charts in 2011.
Ken and Brad released their second album Skipping Rocks in the fall 2013. Guest artists on the new CD include Robin Bullock (guitar, mandolin), Elke Baker (fiddle, viola), and Alex Lacquement (bass). Shortly after its release, the album rapidly ascended the Folk-DJ Radio charts topping out at #4 in November 2013. Bluegrass Today hailed their new album by saying “Ken and Brad are both exceptionally talented musicians and they have created a tight, top-notch sound.” CD Hotlist explains “This father-son duo project is both technically impressive and musically tasteful, a lovely exploration of both tradition and creativity (and of a warm musical relationship).”
Brad is a founding member of the acoustic roots quartet Charm City Junction. The group formed in the fall of 2014 and has rapidly ascended the ranks receiving high praise from Sirius XM, Bluegrass Today, The Washington Post, and the Baltimore Magazine for their creative and energetic sound. The band fuses Old-Time, Bluegrass and Irish music with the talents of Patrick McAvinue (fiddle, mandolin), Sean McComiskey (button accordion), Alex Lacquement (bass) and Brad (banjo). In just two years, the band has performed or is scheduled to perform at the Kennedy Center, Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, Strathmore, Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival, Charm City Folk & Bluegrass Festival, and many other venues. More info on Charm City Junction can be found HERE
In August 2013, Brad signed on as a weekly radio DJ for WAMU’s Bluegrass Country, a nationally- renowned 24/7 bluegrass and folk radio station in Washington D.C. Kolodner combines his radio production skills learned in college with his extensive knowledge of Old-Time, bluegrass, folk roots, and Americana music for his radio show on Bluegrass Country. "The Brad Kolodner Show" airs on Saturdays from 2-4 p.m.
Over the past few years, Brad has made it his mission to jump-start the Baltimore Old Time Music community. With his dad, he co-founded Baltimore Old Time Jam in the spring of 2013, a bi-weekly jam in the heart of Baltimore City at an Irish Pub called Liam Flynn’s Ale House that he leads with his father. The jam is a gathering place for dozens of area Old-Time musicians and enthusiasts. Additionally, Brad spearheaded the creation of the Baltimore Square Dance, a wildly popular bi-monthly dance held at Mobtown Ballroom and The Ideal Arts Space in the Pigtown and Hampden neighborhoods, respectively.
Besides performing and recording, Kolodner has developed a passion for teaching banjo. He has taught numerous workshops around the country at a number of camps and folk schools including the John Campbell Folk School (Brasstown, NC), Common Ground on the Hill (Westminster, MD), the House of Musical Traditions (Takoma Park, MD), the Old Town School of Folk Music (Chicago, IL), the Mountain Arts Gathering (Paul Smiths College, NY), the Maiden Creek Old-Time Festival (Blandon, PA) and the Florence Thomas Arts School (Ashe County, NC). Currently residing in his hometown of Baltimore, Brad teaches private banjo lessons to over 35 students. While banjo is Brad’s primary instrument, he also sings and performs on the guitar, fiddle, gourd banjo, and banjola.

“Ken and Brad are both exceptionally talented musicians and they have created a tight, top-notch sound.” – Bluegrass Today, January 2014
"This father-son duo project is both technically impressive and musically tasteful, a lovely exploration of both tradition and creativity (and of a warm musical relationship)." - CD Hotlist, October 2013
“The musicianship on this album is absolutely incredible. Ken Kolodner is, in my estimation, the finest, most able, and diverse hammered dulcimer player anywhere...Brad Kolodner is simply one of the best of the new generation of Old Time melodic Clawhammer banjo players... it still touches me that a father and son not only can make music that sounds so good, but that they so obviously enjoy making such great music with each other and their music friends.” - Dan Hayes, Sept 2013
“On Ken & Brad Kolodner’s new album, Skipping Rocks, the dynamic pulse of their neo-traditional sound is ringed with masterful guest artists, sewing together new takes on old tunes, and new tunes with old slants. Listening to Brad & Ken Kolodner’s Skipping Rocks not only highlights the magic that seems to spark in musical families, but also transports its listeners to the soft shores of a summer lake, where each skip of the rock is a moment that ripples out; from father to son, from a duo to a musical community, from old tunes to new ones. It’s a moment in life and time that will have you pushing play again and again.” - Hearth Music, September 2013
"Give me a band that has mastered their music, their instruments, and their vocal approach, and who play with feeling and intensity along with an apparent appreciation for the roots of music from an earlier time, and I’m happy. The group demonstrates that old-time music doesn’t need to be a stale, modern reproduction of a relic from a bygone era- a pale reflection of nostalgia for a time few of us can imagine. This music can be and- in the right hands- is a modern sound enjoyed by contemporary individuals played with all the passion that music should include. On their album Skipping Rocks they not only treat the music as a living entity deserving of respect and nurturing hands, they bring freshness within their interpretation of old time music. This is a wonderful album, a complete set of music that runs nearly an hour. It is bright, lively, and thought provoking. " - Fervor Coulee, January 2014
“An album based around clawhammer banjo and hammered dulcimer might not seem like it should work, but this does. There’s truly not a bad song on the album, though the Kolodners pull from various influences and some songs will definitely appeal to certain listeners more than others. Ken and Brad are both exceptionally talented musicians and they have created a tight, top-notch sound.” - Bluegrass Today, January 2014.
Skipping Rocks debuted at #4 on the Folk DJ-L in October, 2013; 20th on The Roots Music Charts; Best of 2013 lists include The Baltimore City Paper, Folk Alley XM Radio, The Sing Out Radio Magazine on XM Radio, Detours on WTMD.
